VP Pence Says He Won’t Invoke 25th Amendment in Letter To Speaker Pelosi

Late Tuesday evening, Vice President Mike Pence sent a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi outlining why he won’t be invoking the 25th Amendment to remove President Trump from power.

In the very succinct letter, Pence used Pelosi’s own words against her effort to remove the president. He opened the letter by thanking her and the rest of the Congressional leadership for their hard work in completing the Electoral College vote certification the previous week, despite the unprecedented storming of the U.S. Capitol that delayed it. He then reminded her of her own comments during the formation of a 25th Amendment Commission earlier this past summer. She said that “a President’s fitness for office must be determined by science and facts.” He also reminded her that she said that we must be “very respectful of not making a judgement on the basis of a comment or behavior that we don’t like, but based on a medical decision.” He closed his letter by citing a bible verse and urging that now is the time to turn down the temperature, not to pour fuel on the fire. He reaffirmed his commitment to assist in a peaceful transfer of power to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

His rejection of her “ultimatum” on invoking the 25th Amendment sets up the likelihood that the House of Representatives will vote on whether to impeach the President on Wednesday.
