(NewsBreakDaily.com) – There are so many things going on in the world that are hard to anticipate or identify, even if it’s happening right before your eyes. That makes directly preparing for such things such as terrorist attacks, difficult, though not impossible. Terrorism, in its all forms, is something that everyone should be prepared for, whether at home or abroad.
Preparation Is Key
Much of the defense against terrorism comes in the form of being properly prepared before stepping foot outside your door, or, frankly, taking any other action.
Everything, from what you wear to what’s on your phone, is an opportunity to prepare for a terrorist attack. That’s not to say you need to buy an entire terrorist preparation kit to take with you every single day, modifying your standard loadout will do the trick just fine.
Prepare your phone by having essential numbers and data stored on it. Program the phone numbers and social media pages of local authorities and emergency services. Research where you’re going and add any information that’s relevant to that location as well. Downloading apps like news feeds and flashlights will also help you in a crisis.
Carry essential gear including medications, bottled water, and maybe a snack in the event that you’re unexpectedly stranded somewhere. Having other odds and ends with you, like chargers for mobile devices, is also a good idea.
Inform those close to you where you’re going and what you’re doing. Creating a micromanaged schedule isn’t necessary, but the point is your friends, family, and neighbors should know when something’s wrong without you telling them. That way, someone can call for help if you’re unexpectedly late or completely drop out of contact.
Situational awareness is essential, especially when on the lookout for terrorist activities. Part of being aware includes not obstructing your field of view by wearing bulky sunglasses or wearing headphones with the volume so loud that you can’t hear anything else. Keep an eye out for any suspicious people who don’t belong or are acting strange. Memorize all entrances and exits of the buildings you enter. If you’re familiar with a particular location or venue, check to see if anything’s out of the ordinary or appears to have been tampered with.
Move away from vulnerable locations if a terrorist activity is happening. If you’re in a hotel, move away from the windows, close the curtains, lock the doors, and turn off the lights. Move away from dangerous areas if possible and take cover if you’re stranded.
Research your travel destinations and apply the above tips to those locations as well. If possible, have a backup plan for a return trip.
You may not be fully prepared for every situation, but the bottom line is to know what to look for every time you go outside. The stakes involved with terrorist activities are too high to not go unaccounted for, even if they’re rare events.
As the saying goes “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
