(NewsBreakDaily.org) – On June 29, the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled on the first big abortion case of the Trump era. It was a major disappointment for pro-life Americans. In a 5-4 decision, the SCOTUS found a Louisiana law regulating abortion clinics was unconstitutional.
Chief Justice John Roberts came down on the side of the four Liberal justices in this important decision.
The Louisiana law required all abortion doctors to have admitting rights at a hospital within 30 miles. But Roberts and the Libs on the court determined this law violated the abortion rights provided by the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.
The Louisiana law was passed in 2014, but its enforcement was blocked by a lawsuit brought by two doctors and a medical clinic. Opponents of the legislation argued the law would leave only one doctor at one single clinic in the state to provide abortion services for 10,000 women every year.
One reason Roberts gave for siding with the Liberals against this law is it’s very similar to a Texas law, which the SCOTUS struck down in 2016. The chief justice said a precedent had been set.
It’s unfortunate that Roberts came down on the side against life. This is the second time in a month the chief justice has ruled with the Liberal justices. The first time was in the case pertaining to whether or not President Donald Trump could end DACA. It looks like we’re going to need some more truly Conservative justices on the Court.
