September 15th will down as a truly historic day in world history. Two decades removed from the last peace agreement struck between Israel and Jordan, President Donald Trump hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan, and Bahrain Foreign Minster Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalif at the White House to sign the Abraham Accords.
The signing of the Abraham Accords was a watershed moment in the Middle East. Arab nations are beginning to realize that Israel is their friend, not their enemy.
As this new relationship begins to bloom, so will the economy of these nations as business and tourism explodes. Israel has become the most militarily, economically, and technologically advanced nation in the region and the countries like the UAE and Bahrain recognize that the time has come to cast away historic rivalries and animosity to further the greater good.
The Abraham Accords is also historic in that the UAE and Bahrain now recognize that Israel has the right to exist as a Jewish state in the Middle East. For decades, the Arabs have vowed to push the “occupiers” into the Mediterranean and recapture the land that is theirs.
Islam—like Judaism—is a religion that looks to the ancient biblical figure of Abraham as a founding father. Muslims believe that the Kaaba (Islam’s most important holy site, located in Mecca) was built by Abraham and his son Ishmael. The Jews look to Abraham, his son Isaac, and his grandson Jacob as the forefathers of the Jewish people. Given this history, even the name, “Abraham Accords,” is significant because the UAE and Bahrain are recognizing the Jews as descendants of Abraham and rightful dwellers of the land west of the Jordan River.
There is also a very important national security aspect to the Abraham Accords. In July of 2015, then-President Barack Obama entered into the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (also known as the Iran Nuclear Deal) with the mullahs in Tehran. The deal basically sent Iran pallets in cash in exchange for a promise that Iran would halt uranium enrichment for ten years.
The JCPOA was widely criticized by those who believed it was a lopsided deal that payed Iran to put off production of a nuclear bomb. Also, many were doubtful that the mullahs would even halt uranium enrichment and just continue in secret.
I mean, this is the regime that believes the USA is the “Great Satan,” and shouts “death to America” in the streets. I wonder why there would be cause for concern?
The Iran Nuclear Deal worried the Arab world and brought into focus the truth that the real threat in the Middle East is not Israel, but Iran. The Abraham Accords is confirmation of the old adage: “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
President Donald Trump made history on Monday, September 15th. Thanks, Obama, for the disastrous Iran Nuclear Deal.
