Couple Charged With Hate Crime, You'll Never Guess Why

(NewsBreakDaily.org) – Over the weekend, David Nelson, 53, and Nichole Anderson, 42, of Martinez, California, painted over a Black Lives Matter (BLM) mural. On July 6, the District Attorney’s Office in Contra Costa County announced that they would be charging the couple for their actions.

The district attorney charged Nelson and Anderson with three misdemeanors, including a hate crime. The alleged criminal conduct was caught on video, which quickly went viral.

The BLM artwork was painted on July 4 in downtown Martinez in front of the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse. The painters applied for and got a permit from the city to create the bright yellow mural. After it was complete, Nelson and Anderson showed up with supplies and began covering letters in black paint.

It is unclear how painting over a mural could possibly be a hate crime. But if the couple is convicted, they are looking at up to a year in county jail.
